چکیده

BACKGROUND Accurate assessments of pain help healthcare professionals to identify its source and manage it appropriately. Pain in cognitively impaired older adults is difficult to assess and this can result in poor management and outcomes. In response to the vulnerability of this patient group, researchers have produced a variety of tools for pain assessment in cognitively impaired older adults. CONCLUSION Replication research is recommended to validate further and generalize results, although there is enough evidence to support the use of direct observation of behaviour in identifying pain in this group of patients.

Assessing pain in persons with dementia.

WHY: There is no evidence that persons with dementia physiologically experience less pain than do other older adults. Rather than being less sensitive to pain, cognitively-impaired elders may fail to interpret sensations as painful, are often less able to recall their pain, and may not be able to verbally communicate it to their care providers. As such, cognitively impaired older adults are oft...

Postoperative pain control in the elderly

Background Older adults are a heterogeneous group but generally have a higher peak and longer duration of action from opioids. Monitoring cumulative effects from analgesics is particularly important for older adults [1]. Older adults should be first asked to describe their hurting or pain in their own words. Pain intensity should be measured with a consistent scale, after making sure that the i...

Paramedic assessment of pain in the cognitively impaired adult patient

BACKGROUND Paramedics are often a first point of contact for people experiencing pain in the community. Wherever possible the patient's self report of pain should be sought to guide the assessment and management of this complaint. Communication difficulty or disability such as cognitive impairment associated with dementia may limit the patient's ability to report their pain experience, and this...

The Pain Behaviors for Osteoarthritis Instrument for Cognitively Impaired Elders (PBOICIE).

Older adults with severe cognitive impairment have trouble responding to questions about their osteoarthritis knee or hip pain, which makes pain management difficult. This article reports the development and psychometric testing of the PBOICIE in three studies. ...

Cognitive Training among Cognitively Impaired Older Adults: A Feasibility Study Assessing the Potential Improvement in Balance

BACKGROUND Emerging literature suggests that mobility and cognition are linked. Epidemiological data support a negative association between cognition and falls among cognitively intact older adults. A small number of intervention studies found that regimented cognitive training (CT) improves mobility among this population, suggesting that CT may be an under-explored approach toward reducing fal...
